Chamkila Movie, whose colorful lyrics delighted his fans but may have led to his assassination at age 27.
Amar Singh Chamkila, as the film is titled, is directed by Hindi hitmaker Imtiaz Ali, who reunites on the project with acclaimed musician and composer AR Rahman, who will handle the film’s score and soundtrack. The duo previously worked together to great success, as director and composer, on Bollywood hits like Rockstar (2011) and Highway (2014).
The in-person Born into poverty in 1960, Amar Singh Chamkila went on to become one of the most well-known vocalists that the Punjab province of northern India has ever produced. He frequently sung about extramarital affairs, adolescent angst, and drug use in his lyrics, which delighted his followers but infuriated more orthodox groups. He was shot and killed in 1988, at the peak of his fame, when he was only 27 years old. The killings, which also claimed the lives of his wife and two bandmates, are still unsolved.

Dosanjh, also a singer, said working with Rahman was a meditative experience.
Parineeti, who is essaying the role of Chamkila’s wife and singing partner Amarjot, said she is grateful to Ali for this opportunity.

Chamkila and Amarjot were killed along with two members of their band in 1988 in an assassination which remains unresolved.
“Amar Singh Chamkila” will be released in 2024.
